This ad is awesome! If it was any better, I would have had an orgasm. Ten Times over. No, seriously! I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to do this sometime! Wait for the slow-mo part. It is such a sadistic pleasure!

My Internet Connection at home stopped working out of the blue on Thursday. Got some basic troubleshooting going, pinging the gateway et al, and finally figured it was a remote issue with Tata Indicom, since I could not even ping the Gateway.
A dozen irritating calls to Tech Support followed, with assurances that my service would be up soon. Friday passed, and so did Saturday. No response. Finally today morning, I had an engineer ringing my doorbell for some ‘troubleshooting’. The guy has one look at my wireless router, plugs out the power cable, plugs it back in, and voila!
Turns out my router had hung, and me, with all my ‘Masters in networking’ did not manage to figure something so trivial. Nice reminder, that…

There seem to be some advantages of staying late in office for research purposes, looks like. The pic below summarises what happened today at 6pm.

And yeah, I was downloading this off the public Internet…
Ah, Life!

Being labeled a complete techie, you’re assumed to be possessing a multitude of electronic items, at any given point in time. I’ll kinda agree I fall into such a bracket, though there’s still a long way to go until I reach what I consider Tech-Nirvana.
I’ve been thinking about writing a page that summarises what gadgets and devices I frequently use, for quite a while now, and I’ve finally got around to doing it, heavily inspired by Paul Thurrott’s ‘What I Use’ Section.
You can find the link here, and on the link bar above.

The past couple of weeks at home have been spent brainstorming. I was running Windows Vista, but I’m simply not impressed with it. My dual core P4 with 2Gigs of RAm slow down to a crawl sometimes on it, with a 512mb NVidia Geforce 7300 Graphics card slow down toa crawl on it, and its quite disconcerting when that happens. Switched over to Ubuntu 7.10, and was more than impressed by it. Compiz Fusion knocks the living daylights out of Aero. The look and feel of the OS was very, very impressive. I then made the decision to switch over completely to Ubuntu. The overall experience seems so much more stable, and enough eye candy without having to compromise on resources.Unfortunately, I do not think its going to materialise in the long run, even though Ubuntu is a superior OS to MS Windows in many ways. Here’s a few reasons why. (more…)

When you’re messing with Computers and live computer networks, sometimes, you experiment with things and they fail. Sometimes, they’re successful, until they are detected by over-enthusiastic sysadmins wanting to prove a point. That has happened. Access to this blog has been banned from my office, for a reason no one who’s ever visited this blog for the past 2 years has known about. Yes, access, only to this blog. No SEV, I can still see your blog, so can I see the parent domain. But I cannot see my own blog.
No, there was no content censorship, but something that really cannot be explained here, for reasons best kept secret.
And hence, there shall not be any posts from work anymore, until and unless I’m using my N82 to post something.

I started off on Facebook as an alternative to Orkut, pretty impressed by its privacy settings. It was a slick web application, more so because it let you add applications of your own, and hence came along SuperPoke, Superlatives, SuperWall, Characteristics and what not.

Well, this is a long pending review of the Nokia N95, which I bought during Diwali. Things happened, I got busy with work, there was a MAJOR firmware upgrade and stuff. Now that the dust has settled down, I think its high time I devote some time and pen down MY review, for the benefit of Supremus and perhaps, others too.

Finally - Number portability. Without getting into the intricate details of what this is and how it can be achieved, its safe enough to say I’m no longer tied to a particular cellphone provider. If I don’t like their services, poof, change the provider, keep the cellphone number.
Its funny, it took so long for India to implement number portability, but, better late than never. On the flipside, there is still a year to go before its going to be operational.

There was a time, when I was hyperly obsessed with laptops. Maybe, during the course of my masters, there was a need to carry one around, considering the humongous amount of coursework and projects that I was doing. It was pretty commonplace for me in the UK, to fire up my Thinkpad in the train, and sit ‘working’ on it. Of course, email checking and chatting did happen simultaneously. I loved my Thinkpad, and it almost became a part of me.
