There was a time, when I was hyperly obsessed with laptops. Maybe, during the course of my masters, there was a need to carry one around, considering the humongous amount of coursework and projects that I was doing. It was pretty commonplace for me in the UK, to fire up my Thinkpad in the train, and sit ‘working’ on it. Of course, email checking and chatting did happen simultaneously. I loved my Thinkpad, and it almost became a part of me.
Then I came back to India. The Thinkpad was still there, but I got myself a powerhouse of a Desktop Computer. The utility of the thinkpad began to dwindle, since I was no longer perenially mobile. Then I started working. The point of having a laptop was then questionable, since I never preferred carrying it to work anyway. Laptop given to bro, and eventually traded back for a new Lenovo, I was essentially laptop-less. Strangely, I never felt the pinch. The N80 was more than enough for everything, considering I had wi-fi’ed my house completely, there was enough wi-fi coverage at office, and there was always Hutch’s data plan to fall back upon, when communting or out. Slowly, the N80 began to metamorphise into my mobile computer. Today, it is completely my mobile computer. I check Gmail on IMAP (my Gmail inbox stays synced), check facebook, Google Reader on the move, and even chat to ‘her’ (okay, I’m going to get rogered for this), when I’m on my way back home, late from work.
Somewhere between the N80 assuming paramount importance in daily life, and the laptop being sold, I began to question my personal necessity of having a personal laptop. End result? Today, I’ve got a couple of laptops lying at work which I could very well use, but no!, I’m pretty averse to carrying it around everyday, so it goes back into the office drawer everyday.
Only, the N80 now seems to be getting a little old. So, the cycle repeats.
A long desire takes shape into reality. Nokia N95, here I come.:-).
